What is Marmen at Home?
Marmen at Home is an ongoing project simply with the aim to encourage concerts in the home. Home concerts were once incredibly popular but they have become more of a rarity in recent years and we want to encourage people to start making music in their homes once again! They can be informal events in celebration of a birthday, formal events to mark the launch of a new business venture, a party for friends or colleagues, or just an opportunity to have live music in your home. And also, it doesn't necessarily have to be in the home; it could be concerts in office spaces, art galleries, restaurants... the format is very flexible.
Why hold a concert in the home?
Chamber music has its name precisely because when it first came about it was performed in the rooms (or chambers) of people's homes. We believe that chamber music is a format that is not only perfectly suited to people's homes, but that when performed in smaller spaces, offers an intimate quality of performance unlike anything you would ever get in a concert hall.
How do we book a concert?
Simply give us a ring on 07860564169, or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Is our space suitable?
Most spaces are suitable, or at least can be made suitable. Just ask yourself whether there is enough space for four musicians to sit in a semi-circle and play comfortably. And for an audience, of course! If you are still unsure, don’t hesitate to get in touch and we can discuss how best to make it work.
Who chooses the music to be performed?
Usually our programme choice is dependent on other concerts we have around the same time, but we are happy to listen to any requests and we will try to accommodate as best as we can. We will work with you so that we can come up with a programme that suits everyone.
How long does a concert last?
A concert usually lasts for around an hour and a half. Two common formats are: 45 minutes, interval, 45 minutes or around an hour without an interval. There are no rules to this, however, and we are happy to accomodate different arrangements depending on the event.
How many people should we invite?
It really depends on the size of the space. Anything from ten (a small-ish living room) to one hundred (a commercial office space or gallery).
What time are the concerts?
Concerts can start at any time. Usually, evening concerts start at 19:30, but we are happy to play in the morning, lunchtime, or late evening; whenever suits you best.
How much will it cost?
A normal recital length concert (45 minutes, short interval, 45 minutes) is usually somewhere around the realm of £1000, but this depends on the event, the location, any special requirements etc.
Is there anything else I should know?
It is customary to provide performers with a green-room; somewhere to put instrument cases and a change of clothes and somewhere to warm up before performing. A bedroom will do; anywhere big enough to wield a bow (or four). We also require four sturdy chairs without arms. You don’t need to worry about providing music stands as we bring our own, but if you happen to have four lying around, that would be fantastic.
Should we book a concert?
Yes! You need to experience a Marmen at Home concert to understand the joys of having a live chamber music performance in an intimate setting. We believe this music wants to be back in homes again; it's a musical experience unlike anything else... and if you get hungry, you can always just nip over to the fridge and be back before the fourth movement, win win!
